This is Americana the way that the scariest blues and the saddest country records can be. "Looking back, I realize this is the first of three full length records where I finally understood how I wanted my solo records to sound," says Doe. "We were all thrown into a very small and sweaty room until the songs squeezed through the cracks."
Neko Case, Kristin Hersh, Cindy Lee Berryhill and Veronica Jane (Doe's then 16 year old daughter) provide the female side of each story. Exene Cervenka
contributed lyrics for "Hwy 5," a midnight-on-the-Interstate duet with Neko. Grant-Lee Phillips and Dave Alvin lend their unique talents to beautiful, heart-wrenching and savage electric songs, respectively. Not for the faint of heart, this album was recorded in hi-contrast black and white.
