It's Halloween!! Let's all get in the spirit of the season with a little help from Mr Chuck Prophet! How many great songs can you list about Halloween? Well, however long your list, "Castro Halloween" is sure to earn a spot at or near the top. And to keep in the holiday spirit, the single is pressed on pumpkin-orange vinyl - how festive!!
"Castro Halloween" celebrates, as well as laments the demise of, the legendary Halloween parties that used to go down in San Francisco's Castro District. Sadly, they were abruptly canceled/banned by the city a few years back after some scuffles led to gunfire. The party ended, but the spirit lives on in this driving rock n roll number with do-wop vocal cadences, pulsing rhythms and those ringing guitar lines. Chuck Prophet at his best.
"Castro Halloween" is taken from Prophet's most recent release, Temple Beautiful, his passionate and compelling ode to the myth, history and chaotic magic of his adopted home-town, San Francisco. B-side, "I Gotta Get Back", is an out-take from the Temple Beautiful studio sessions. It's sort of a road song, wailing with longing and restlessness, and while it didn't really fit into the overall theme of Temple Beautiful, its another Chuck Prophet classic, full of the swagger and vulnerability that makes great rock n roll tunes so addictive.
